Feature Usage Intelligence

Understand which features users see vs which they use.

The Visibility Problem

Traditional analytics tell you:

  • "15% of users clicked Export"

They don't tell you:

  • Did the other 85% even see the Export button?
  • Was it below the fold?
  • Hidden in a menu?
  • Only visible in certain contexts?

Rise answers these questions.

Key Metrics

Visibility Rate (VR)

Percentage of sessions where a feature was visible on screen.

VR = (Sessions with feature visible) / (Total sessions) × 100

Example:

  • Advanced Search: VR = 12%
  • Users only see this feature in 12% of sessions
  • Insight: Low discoverability, consider making more prominent

Engagement Conversion (EC)

Of users who saw the feature, what percentage used it?

EC = (Users who used feature) / (Users who saw feature) × 100

Example:

  • Export button: EC = 78%
  • Insight: High engagement once discovered. Users find it valuable.

Discovery Gap Score (DGS)

Identifies high-value features that users aren't discovering.

DGS = (1 - VR) × EC × (avg_days_to_discovery / 30)

High DGS = Hidden gem (low visibility, high engagement when found)

Example:

Custom Dashboards:
VR: 18%
EC: 85%
Avg discovery: 23 days
DGS: 0.64 (VERY HIGH)

Insight: Amazing feature, but users take 23 days to find it.
Action: Make more visible during onboarding.

The Four Quadrants

Features fall into four categories based on visibility and usage:

1. High Visibility, High Usage ✅

"Core Features"

Examples:
- Dashboard: VR 95%, EC 88%
- Reports: VR 82%, EC 76%

Characteristics:

  • Easy to discover
  • High engagement
  • Core value drivers

Action: Maintain, optimize, protect

2. High Visibility, Low Usage ⚠️

"Visible But Ignored"

Examples:
- Share Button: VR 78%, EC 12%
- Advanced Filters: VR 65%, EC 18%

Characteristics:

  • Users see it regularly
  • Don't find it valuable OR
  • Don't understand it OR
  • Wrong timing/context

Possible Causes:

  • Not relevant to user's workflow
  • Unclear value proposition
  • Poor UX or confusing interface
  • Requires data/context users don't have

Action: Investigate why users ignore it:

// Rise contextual analysis
Share button ignored because:
- 68% of views: No data to share (empty state)
- 22% of views: User working solo (no team members)
- 10% of views: Other reasons

Fix: Only show Share when user has data AND has team members

3. Low Visibility, High Usage 💎

"Hidden Gems"

Examples:
- Keyboard Shortcuts: VR 8%, EC 92%
- Bulk Actions: VR 15%, EC 88%

Characteristics:

  • Hard to discover
  • VERY valuable once found
  • Power user features
  • Biggest opportunity

Action: Increase visibility

  • Onboarding hints
  • Contextual tips
  • Better UI placement
  • Create Rise Job to drive discovery

4. Low Visibility, Low Usage 📉

"Forgotten Features"

Examples:
- Legacy Export Format: VR 3%, EC 5%
- Unused Integration: VR 2%, EC 8%

Characteristics:

  • Hard to find
  • Not engaging when found
  • Low value OR
  • Better alternatives exist

Action: Consider:

  • Deprecation (sunset feature)
  • Redesign/repositioning
  • Combination with other features

  2. Add onboarding tooltip (day 3-5)
  3. Suggest after user views Reports 3+ times
  4. Add to "Popular Features" section

Contextual Insights

Rise shows why visibility or engagement is low:

Example 1: Export Button

Issue: EC only 45% (should be higher)

Rise Analysis:

Export button visible: 1,240 sessions
Export clicked: 558 sessions (45% EC)

Contextual breakdown:
When data present on screen:
- Clicks: 520 / 780 sessions = 67% EC ✅

When NO data on screen (empty state):
- Clicks: 38 / 460 sessions = 8% EC ❌

Insight: Users try to export from empty state 37% of the time.
They click, get error, confusion.

Solution: Disable export button when no data, or auto-filter to show data.

Issue: VR only 12% (too low)

Rise Analysis:

UI Context Analysis:

Advanced Search visible when:
- User on Search page: VR 85%
- User on other pages: VR 2%

Search page visits: 14% of sessions

Insight: Feature only visible on dedicated Search page,
but most users search from nav bar (never visit Search page).

Solution: Add "Advanced" link next to nav search bar.

Time-Based Insights

Discovery Timeline

Track when users discover features:

Custom Dashboards:
Day 1-7: 12% discovery rate
Day 8-14: 18% discovery rate
Day 15-30: 31% discovery rate
Day 31-90: 48% discovery rate
Never: 52% (!) of users never discover it

Insight: Half of users never find this valuable feature.

Action: Accelerate discovery with Rise Job targeting days 3-7.

Track visibility over time:

Export Button Visibility:
Jan: 78% VR
Feb: 82% VR
Mar: 65% VR (! dropped)

Investigation: UI redesign in March moved Export to menu.
Result: Less visible, lower usage.

Action: Revert placement or add prominent menu indicator.
